Google To Acquire Nest - Android @Home 2.0

nest-thermostat

This appears to be the year of acquisitions for Google. After they announced the acquisition of Bitspin, the makers of the Timely alarm clock app, last week, Google just made another move into the home automation and integration space by acquiring Nest - the company behind the super popular smart thermostats and CO2 sensors.

The deal has not yet finalized since it is subject to regulatory approval but there is little reason to suspect it won't go though. Once the deal is complete Nest is supposed to continue on as its own brand and continue to be led by the Nest's founders Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers.

The news is exciting on many fronts as this opens up the possibility of even greater integration of these products, and others to come, with the google ecosystem via the Android platform.

Google's CEO, Larry Page, was quoted saying:

I’m excited to announce that we’ve agreed to acquire Nest Labs.  Nest’s founders, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, have built a tremendous team that we are excited to welcome into the Google family.  They’re already delivering amazing products you can buy right now--thermostats that save energy and smoke/CO alarms that can help keep your family safe.  It’s amazing to see how they have taken important but unloved devices and made them beautifully simple and useful.  We are excited to bring great experiences to more homes in more countries and fulfill their dreams!

In regards to privacy concerns, Nest has said:

Our privacy policy clearly limits the use of customer information to providing and improving Nest’s products and services. We’ve always taken privacy seriously and this will not change.

In closing, here are some of Nest's CEO Tony Fadell's words on the acquisition
